Południowy Koncern Węglowy is one of Poland’s leading producers of thermal coal, comprising three mining plants located in western Lesser Poland and the eastern part of the Silesian Voivodeship: the Sobieski Mining Plant in Jaworzno, the Brzeszcze Mining Plant in Brzeszcze, and the Janina Mining Plant in Libiąż. Coal produced at these mines is mainly supplied to the residential sector, as well as to the power generation and heating sectors.

The company’s history dates back to 2005, when the Southern Coal Group was formed as a result of the merger of the Sobieski Jaworzno III Mining and Energy Plant and the Janina Mine. In 2007, the company joined the Tauron Group, and in 2014, it changed its name to Tauron Wydobycie. The next step in the company’s development was the incorporation of the Brzeszcze Mining Plant into the company’s assets in 2016, thanks to which Południowy Koncern Węglowy currently extracts coal from three mines: Sobieski, Janina, and Brzeszcze.

In recent years, the facilities of Południowy Koncern Węglowy have produced approximately 5 million tons of coal annually, and the company employs about 6,300 people. Thanks to its stable market position and large coal reserves, the company plays a significant role in domestic energy production, supplying raw materials to both the power generation and heating sectors.
