The Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of the oldest enterprises in Europe, having become a salt production site as early as the 13th century and playing a key role in the development of the Polish economy over the following centuries. Salt from this mine reached the tables of almost all of Europe, and its significance in the history of the mining industry is invaluable.

Today, although the mine is one of the most frequently visited places in Poland, it still functions as an active mining facility, conducting work to preserve unique mining monuments and protect natural resources. With over 245 kilometers of galleries and 2,391 chambers, the Wieliczka Mine is a veritable labyrinth of underground workings. To protect this heritage, numerous renovation projects are underway, such as anchoring the workings and modernizing the mine shafts.

The Wieliczka salt deposit, together with the neighboring Barycz deposit, forms a unique complex spanning 10 kilometers. The mine is also known for the unique microclimate of the salt chambers, which is used for health benefits. Since 1978, it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a culmination of its historical, cultural, and technical values.

Wieliczka is a place where mining tradition combines with a modern approach to heritage and environmental protection. Today, although salt is no longer produced on an industrial scale, the mine still serves to protect natural resources by disposing of saline water. Another important goal is to preserve the voids left by salt mining, ensuring the long-term preservation of historical monuments.

The mine’s mission is not only to preserve this unique site for future generations, but also to responsibly share it through educational tourist trails and to utilize the healing properties of the salt microclimate. This place not only attracts tourists but also serves as a space for reflection on the heritage, history, and traditions of the Wieliczka miners.

The first head of the Department was Professor Witold Budryk, considered an eminent scholar and authority in the field of mining. In 1959, under the leadership of Professor Jerzy Litwiniszyn, the Department underwent intensive development, expanding its scientific scope to include areas such as rock mechanics, flow metrology, air and gas flow dynamics in mine ventilation networks, micrometrics, mining damage, and gas dynamics.

Thanks to the efforts of Professor Litwiniszyn and his deputy, Professor Stanisław Knothe, the construction of a new building for the Department at 27 Reymonta Street in Kraków was completed between 1964 and 1968, which has been its current location since 1968. In 1977, as a result of further development, the Department of Strata Mechanics of the Polish Academy of Sciences was transformed into the Institute of Strata Mechanics (IMG PAN), receiving a new statute and the right to award doctoral degrees. In 1987, Professor Wacław Trutwin was appointed Director of the Institute, and in 2003, Professor Wacław Dziurzyński took over this position. Since 2019, the Institute’s Director has been Dr. Przemysław Skotniczny, DSc, Eng.

The Institute conducts research and development activities in two main departments: the Department of Flow Physics (including the Flow Metrology Laboratory and the Mine Ventilation Laboratory) and the Department of Rock Mechanics (including the Micrometrics Laboratory and the Rock Deformation Laboratory). All research teams at the Institute are interdisciplinary, enabling collaboration with both domestic and international research centers and enterprises.

Since its inception, the Institute has conducted research of both a cognitive and applied, design, and implementation nature. It particularly addresses current scientific issues related to mining, including safety engineering in underground operations and their impact on the environment. Research topics include issues that have not yet had satisfactory solutions, such as methods for controlling rock and gas outbursts, predicting the ventilation process in complex network structures, and studying the physical properties of rocks with pore fluids.

The Institute engages in labor-intensive experiments aimed at verifying developed theories and methods for analyzing physical phenomena and processes. Thanks to its unique equipment, the Institute conducts experimental research in laboratories and on real-world facilities, as well as numerical experiments. Additionally, the Institute houses the Ventilation Measurement Instruments Calibration Laboratory (No. AP 118), which is accredited and constitutes a key element of its research activities, ensuring the high quality of its measurements.

In 2025, the KOMAG Institute of Mining Technology celebrated its 75th anniversary. Its history dates back to 1963, when the Central Bureau of Mining Machinery Design was transformed into the Coal Industry Design and Mechanization Works (ZKMPW). The establishment of ZKMPW was a key step in the development of research and design facilities for underground coal mining. Alongside the design work, research began on mining, loading, haulage, and mine support processes, as well as testing mine electrification systems and electrical equipment for mining machines.

As part of ZKMPW’s continued development, new units were established, including the Mining Electronics Plant in Tychy, “Elektrometal” in Cieszyn, and the Cybernetic Mining Complexes Plant in Biskupice. The experimental mine designated M-300 and the automated mine “Jan” were incorporated into ZKMPW. Next to the M-300 Experimental Mine, the Experimental Machinery Construction Plant was established, which was later transformed into the Personnel Development Plant.

In 1975, as a result of reorganization, a section was separated from the Coal Industry Design and Mechanization Plant, encompassing the Experimental Machinery Construction Plant, the M-300 Experimental Mine, and the Personnel Development Plant, creating the KOMAG Central Design and Construction Center for Mining Machinery in Gliwice. KOMAG was granted research and development center status, and to better link the machine design process with its production, it was subordinated to the POLMAG Mining Machinery Industry Association, which brought together all mining machinery and equipment factories. KOMAG then became the design, research, and development resource for these factories, including FAMUR, FAZOS, TAGOR, RYFAMA, and GEORYT.

In 1979, KOMAG acquired the ORTEM Mining Machinery Design and Technology Center, expanding its expertise to include mining machinery and equipment manufacturing technologies, as well as production organization and management. As a result of this reorganization, the name was changed to the Mining Machinery Design and Technology Center, and later, after another reorganization, to the KOMAG Mining Mechanization Center.

Since January 1, 2009, KOMAG has operated as the KOMAG Institute of Mining Technology. Over the years, the institute has continually developed its expertise, becoming one of the key research and development centers in the field of mining machinery and technology. Thanks to its rich history and experience, KOMAG remains at the forefront of the industry, providing innovative solutions and supporting the development of mining worldwide.

The company has many strengths that form the foundation of its operations, including:

  • Sand mine,
  • Reclamation areas,
  • Technology for waste recovery and processing,
  • Investment areas,
  • Railway infrastructure.

Maczki-Bór S.A. owns an open-pit sand mine and reclamation areas located in Sosnowiec.
