Organization of a study trip to Germany

A study visit to Lower Lusatia in Germany took place on September 22–25 of this year. Participants included entrepreneurs, representatives of local authorities, universities, research institutes, business support organizations, and other stakeholders in the transformation process.

The purpose of the trip was to learn about the experiences of EU coal-mining regions regarding transformation projects (including those related to the redevelopment of post-industrial sites), to exchange experiences, and to initiate cooperation. Participants had the opportunity to meet with local authorities, economic self-government bodies, and representatives of the scientific community, as well as to visit industrial facilities and the still-operating Welzow-Süd lignite mine.

During a meeting with researchers from the Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU) in Cottbus, the participants on the trip learned about the region’s unique characteristics, its transformations, and the challenges it faces. They then made several visits to industrial facilities, such as:

Center for Hybrid Systems (chesco)
LEAG AG, the region’s leading energy company, which is already facing the challenges associated with the transformation of the fuel and energy sector
TAKRAF AG, a leading manufacturer of mining machinery and equipment
the Welzow-Süd lignite mine, which is scheduled to remain in operation until 2038, but plans are already underway for the redevelopment of the site after that date

We also had the opportunity to learn about the region’s transformation from a social perspective during a meeting with labor union representatives, who discussed the ongoing Revierwende project, aimed at involving workers and taking their interests into account during the transition away from coal.

Meanwhile, a visit to the Chamber of Industry and Commerce provided insight into the support opportunities for entrepreneurs offered by business support institutions, which were presented during meetings with representatives of the Brandenburg Economic Development Agency, as well as current efforts in the field of hydrogen utilization.

The redevelopment of post-industrial sites was the focus of discussions during the visit to the Lausitz Science Park, located on the grounds of a former airport.
