The importance of Lower Silesian mining for Poland’s raw material security, the development of modern technologies, and the education of future professionals for the raw materials sector will be the main topics of the 6th edition of the interdisciplinary Scientific and Technical Conference entitled “Traditions and Innovations in Mining”. The event is organised by the Faculty of Geoengineering, Mining and Geology of Wrocław University of Science and Technology, the Association of Alumni of the Faculty of Mining of Wrocław University of Science and Technology, and the Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute.

The Mining Chamber of Industry and Commerce has assumed substantive patronage over the event. Janusz Olszowski, President of the Mining Chamber of Industry and Commerce, is also a member of the conference’s Scientific and Technical Committee.

For years, the conference has been one of the most important events bringing together representatives of the scientific community, industry, and public administration to discuss the challenges related to the development of the raw materials sector. This year’s edition, which will take place on 26-27 November, will focus on the role of Lower Silesian mining in the context of Poland’s raw material security, the energy transition, and the development of a modern and competitive economy.

The event will begin with an October prologue, organised during the inauguration of the academic year at the Faculty of Geoengineering, Mining and Geology of Wrocław University of Science and Technology. In cooperation with the City of Wrocław, an open exhibition will be prepared to promote modern mining, the potential of Lower Silesia’s natural resources, and activities supporting environmental protection and sustainable development.

The November conference will include both scientific and technical sessions as well as an expert panel entitled “Lower Silesia Mines the Future – on the Importance of the Raw Materials Industry and the Education of Specialists”. One of the unprecedented elements of the event will be the presentation of the assumptions of the Regional Raw Materials Policy for Lower Silesia.

One of the most important outcomes of the conference will be the development of a common position on the strategic importance of Lower Silesia’s mineral resources for Poland’s economic and raw material security, as well as the identification of directions for the further development of responsible and innovative mining.

The conference was initiated and conceived by Prof. Robert Król, DSc, PhD, Eng., Head of the Department of Mining at Wrocław University of Science and Technology. From the very beginning, he has developed the idea of the event as a platform for dialogue connecting science, industry, and public administration around the challenges related to raw material security and the future of modern mining.
